We are working on our Tech Page so we can get you up to date information on all of the latest tech info from places like slashdot.com and the other tech sites! The information may not be up-to-date, but the date by the info will indicate that! GNOME for Linux Black Tux is not the Gnome.org GNOME! It is an OE built off of the idea. Also, Linux Black Tux does not use Linus Travods Kernel!

6-20-01: After a recent siding with the People on the fact that Linux Black Tux's GNOME environment should be open source, we have made changes to the Rights of the users and the use of the program. They are as follows:
1. The user cannot just add 1-2 lines and call it their own. They must make a huge change to the kernel it's self. They can add new options. And then make it also opensource and avalible to the public. Also, they must mail me a copy via E-Mail so i can post it on the downloads page.

2. Credit must be giving to us in the head of the source, it must say:
[program name] was made by the original Linux Black Tux GNOME
All rights to Steven Morrissey for the creation.
(c) Linux Black Tux 2001

6-18-01: Beta testing of the New GNOME environment for the LInux Black Tux program is done. The program is now finished 87% and will under go one project...make a Programming and Editing of GNOME tour (aka.. Programming tour on the help menu). Now we will be put into the open source community for the world!

Ogle Does CSS and DVD Menus

Posted by CmdrTaco on Friday June 22, @09:42AM
from the one-step-closer dept.
javilon noted that a new DVD Player for Linux has appeared, and this one supports CSS and is the first player to implement menus. It's called Ogle and is developed by a few students at Chalmers University of Technology ins Sweden. It's really exciting to see several different groups independantly and together developing players. The only question is when willt he MPAA give up?

The Ultimate Limits Of Computers

Posted by ~timothy"timothy on Friday June 22, @09:00AM
from the density-and-entropy dept.
Qui-Gon writes: "Found an interesting article about the 'The Ultimate Limits of Computers' over at Ars Technica. This article is very heavy on the physics of computing, not for the faint-hearted." Somewhere between practical reality and sheer Gedankenexperiment, the exploration here keeps getting more relevant as shrinking die sizes and improving nanotech wear away at previously impassable barriers. The article is based on a paper discussing the absolute limits of computational power.

Net Cemetery

Ant wrote to us regarding coverage of the .com dead - the Net Cemetery. It's a fun piece, which gets into the problems of covering and reviewing a medium that's changing everyday. If you're into wandering through the .com wasteland, you should also check out Ghost Sites, which does a great job of "museumifing" (sounds like transmorgify) the same type of sites.

Cyc System Prepares to Take Over World

Posted by michael on Friday June 22, @07:09AM
from the brittney-cleary-slated-to-be-first-against-the-wall dept.
Scotch Game writes: "The LA Times is running a story about the soon-to-be-even-more-famous Cyc knowledge base that has been created by Cycorp under the leadership of Douglas B. Lenat (bio ~k99dl01/GetSmart/DouglasLenat.html"here). It's a pop piece with little technical information, but it does have some enticing bits such as the suggestion that the Cyc system is developing a sense of itself. If you're not familiar with Cycorp and its goals then take a look. Of course, you should realize that this is, in fact, the system that will one day send Arnold Schwarzenegger back in time in order to kill a young pretty lass by the name of Sarah Connor. But for now the system is pre-sentient and pretty cool ..." See also OpenCyc.

Cappuccino PC Round 2

Posted by ~timothy"timothy on Friday June 22, @03:39AM
from the still-drinking dept.
Michael Cook writes: "Ars Technica has just posted a follow up to the review of the original Espresso PC (Slashdotted here(1), and here(2)), a review of the new and much-improved Cappuccino PC! It finally has ethernet and now it's truly possible to have a server farm in a bread box!" This is a slightly off-the-wall review of this promising machine, considering (among other things) that the review unit was stolen, but it sure sounds like a worthy non-toy toy.

Bob Young On Intellectual Property

Posted by michael on Thursday June 21, @09:00PM
from the raising-awareness dept.
Michael Manoochehri writes: "Slashdot readers might be interested in this interview I did with Center for the Public Domain and Red Hat Chairman Bob Young. Bob talks about the goals of the center, the future of Public Domain, and the state of the world's IP. In this time of constant ideological attack on open-source software by Microsoft, it is refreshing to hear a contrasting (and well spoken) viewpoint." Slashdot also interviewed Bob Young a few months ago.

Your Rights Online: @Home Cuts Newsgroups Due to DMCA Complaints

from the alt.dmca.strikes.again.again.again dept.
hobb writes: "This is interesting... According to a post to athome.announce, Excite@Home is deciding to pull a bunch of newsgroups due to DMCA violations. Sure, the group names listed suggest possible violations, but it seems quite sudden. I wonder who might be pressuring them... The posting reads [...]" The posting is reproduced below. We don't have access to athome.* newsgroups from the outside world, so if any readers are @Home subscribers, feel free to comment...

Mac Nostalgia On Two Fronts

Posted by ~timothy"timothy on Thursday June 21, @05:08PM
from the apfelschnitzel dept.
mbishop writes: "There's an article over at MacCentral about this years MacHack keynote where all the original creators of the Macintosh got together to talk about OS X and what they think about Steve Jobs." And if the early days of the Mac are too recent for you, Tom Owad writes to say that "the Apple I Owners Club, founded in 1977 by Joe Torzewski, is back, along with the most extensive reference to the Apple I in existence. The site contains over 120 pages detailing the Apple I computer."

Roxio Countersues Gracenote

Posted by CmdrTaco on Thursday June 21, @04:05PM
from the cases-that-matter dept.
Silverhammer writes "Roxio has countersued Gracenote over fair use of the CDDB. Check out the press release. Basically, the suit includes all the gripes voiced here on Slashdot: you can't patent free data (album titles and track listings), you can't patent against prior art, you can't patent data submitted in good faith by users, yadda, yadda, yadda…"

Senator Says Spammers Have First-Amendment Rights

Posted by CmdrTaco on Thursday June 21, @03:02PM
from the well-they-do dept.
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), while joining Rep. Gephardt (D-MO) in a discussion of how Democrats are the "guardians of the New Economy," noted that opt-out is better, because it gives companies their first ammendment right to contact you. I agree, companies do have a right to contact me. But they should be required to pay "postage" for that right. I think spammers should pay a penny per k to both me and my ISP. A 5k spam would cost a dime. Still less then a stamp, but it'd make me a few hundred bucks a month for my time, bandwidth, and hardware costs. Spammers take away my property and happiness. Isn't that a right too? And opt-out is a joke. I've opted out of countless things, but I still get a hundred+ spams a day. Thank god for mail filters.
